Builders 2.0 · Pensive

An AI career agent
that works for builders

Builders learns what you have built and what you want next, then introduces you to fast growing startups. I designed 2.0, which turned a job portal into Ara, an agent that works for the builder.

Overview

From a job portal to an agent that works for you

Builders is Pensive’s hiring product for early career, AI native talent. Version 1.0 grew in layers: profile pages, a dashboard, job lists and an agent in a side panel. In 2.0 the agent is the product. Ara learns what builders want, searches the market and turns a fit into a warm intro.

“Never before has someone successfully sent us a candidate that converted to offer this fast. We are picky.” Kais, CEO of Blockit

Problem

The application black hole

The old hiring signal is breaking. Résumés and code tests can’t show who can really build, so strong early career builders without big names on their CV get lost. The startups that want them can’t find them.

A builder’s job search, before

Five jobs, all done alone

  • 01

    Find

Scroll keyword job boards for roles that might fit.

  • 02

    Filter

Guess which startups are real, funded and hiring at their level.

  • 03

    Apply

Send the same résumé into application piles.

  • 04

    Wait

Hear nothing back, with no idea why.

  • 05

    Negotiate

Accept an offer blind. There is no levels.fyi for startups.

How might we

get undervalued builders seen for what they’ve built, while giving startups a signal they can trust?

Before → After

1.0 was a portal. 2.0 is an agent.

Builders 1.0 was built feature by feature from May to October 2026. Each piece worked, but builders had to stitch them together. The agent, the most useful part, sat in a side panel.

Builders 1.0 · May to Oct 2026

  1. Profile pageA public builder profile to fill in and share
  2. Onboarding formA long, numbered questionnaire
  3. Job listsOpportunities and unreviewed jobs to sort through
  4. Agent on the sideA floating panel, separate from the jobs

Builders 2.0 · Oct 2026

  1. Meet AraOne question: what do you want to do next?
  2. Jobs in the chatAra answers with roles you can open and track
  3. PreferencesWhat Ara learned, editable in one place
  4. Warm introWhen there’s a fit, Builders introduces you

Drag to compare: the 1.0 form vs asking Ara

Builders 1.0 onboarding: question 3 of a numbered form, “What kind of engineering do you want to do?”, with chips from Frontend to Operations
Builders 2.0: a builder’s request to Ara for founding product designer roles, answered with three matching jobs
  • The agent moved to the centre

The side panel became the home screen. Ara opens every session and jobs arrive as cards in the chat.

  • Job lists folded into the chat

The two job lists are gone. Ara brings roles into the chat and the ones you like go to My jobs.

  • Profile pages gave way to preferences

No public page to maintain. Builders review what Ara has learned and set their hard no’s.

Approach

Each rule traded a little speed for trust

  • Conversation first

The app opens on one question, “What do you want to do next?”, not a filter panel.
    Tradeoff: less browsing, more asking.

  • Every answer pays back

Each preference a builder sets changes what Ara surfaces right away.
    Tradeoff: more questions up front.

  • Boundaries come first

Hard no’s for companies, roles and industries, so Ara never resurfaces what you’ve ruled out.
Tradeoff: a smaller, sharper set of matches.

  • Make worth visible

Comp benchmarks sit beside the search, so builders know where they stand before they talk to anyone.
Tradeoff: we show ranges, not promises.

SolutionFor builders

What Ara does for you

Ask in your own words

Builders type what they want, like “founding product designer roles at AI startups, remote or NYC”. Ara reads their profile, searches and answers with roles they can Track in one tap.

Preferences that read like a conversation

Role, company, timing, pay and boundaries as short, tappable choices. Rank stages, describe culture in plain words and set hard no’s.

One place to track every move

Roles you like land in My jobs and move from Tracked to Applied, In Process and Offer. Every detail is one click away.

Know what you’re worth

Enter your pay, stage and role. Builders compares you with the Bay Area and your peers, so you know where you stand before you negotiate.

A profile built from the work

Experience and skills arrive filled in. Builders add a few lines, and it becomes the story behind every warm intro.

For companies

One team for the whole hire

For companies, Builders is one partner from first search to signed offer. Three products, each showing the signal behind a candidate.

  • Builders Hire: a warm intro notification for a Founding Engineer candidate, Maya C., with proof of work tags and Request intro / Pass buttons

    Hire

Warm intros from a pool of 100K+ builders, with the context to say yes in one tap.

  • Builders Screen: candidates Maya C., Devon R., Priya N. and Theo W. with scores out of 100 and an advance, review or reject recommendation each

    Screen

Every applicant gets a score out of 100 and a report that explains it.

  • Builders Assess: a browser IDE open on webhooks.ts with Claude Code and Codex tabs and a prompt asking Claude to add backoff to the webhook retries

    Assess

A real codebase in a sandboxed IDE with Claude Code and Codex. See how candidates build with AI.

Impact

What changed after launch

Analytics from the first eleven days after Meet Ara went live (Oct 24 to Nov 4, 2026), next to our own 1.0 numbers.

  • 62.6%

of builders who saw Meet Ara messaged it (139 of 222)

  • 39s

median time from Meet Ara to the first message

  • 40.5%

    tracked a job within a week (90 of 222)

  • 16 → 200

builder signups a week, from May on 1.0 to October

  • 46%

of sourced candidates got a warm intro in a fintech pilot. Every one replied.

Lessons

What I believe now about AI that represents people

  • 01

An agent earns trust by showing what it knows about you and why it chose what it chose.

  • 02

The less a product feels like a form, the more people tell it. That is the signal.

  • 03

Agents propose; people decide. Every intro starts with the builder saying yes.

This is just a part of the story…
